EPILEP-Phenytoin Sodium 100mg Tablet EPILEP ER- Phenytoin Sodium Extended Release 300mg TABLET
EPILEP-Phenytoin Sodium 100mg Tablet EPILEP ER- Phenytoin Sodium Extended Release 300mg TABLET
Generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure
Complex partial (psychomotor, temporal lobe) seizures
Prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or following neurosurgery
How it works
Phenytoin sodium is an antiepileptic drug. The primary site of action appears to be the motor cortex where spread of seizure activity is inhibited. Possibly by promoting sodium efflux from neurons, phenytoin tends to stabilize the threshold against hyper excitability caused by excessive stimulation or environmental changes capable of reducing membrane sodium gradient. Phenytoin reduces the maximal activity of brain stem centers responsible for the tonic phase of tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures.
Indications
Generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure
Complex partial (psychomotor, temporal lobe) seizures
Prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or following neurosurgery
Dosage
100 mg orally three times daily
Maintenance: 300-400 mg/day; increase to 600 mg/day if necessary
May adjust dose no sooner than 7-10 day intervals when indicated
Side Effects
The most common manifestations encountered with phenytoin therapy are preferable to this system and are usually dose-related. These include nystagmus, ataxia, slurred speech, decreased coordination, and mental confusion. Dizziness, insomnia, transient nervousness, motor twitchings, and headaches have also been observed. There have also been rare reports of phenytoin-induced dyskinesias, including chorea, dystonia, tremor, and asterixis, similar to those induced by phenothiazine and other neuroleptic drugs.
Contraindication
Phenytoin is contraindicated in those patients who are hypersensitive to phenytoin or other hydantoins.
