DEPRESSION
How it works
Venlafaxine is an antidepressant of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) class. This means it increases the concentrations of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine in the body and the brain.

Dosage
Usual Adult Dose for Depression
Extended release:
Initial dose: 75 mg orally once daily
Maintenance dose: May increase in daily increments of up to 75 mg at intervals of no less than 4 days
Maximum dose (moderately depressed outpatients): 225 mg/day
Maximum dose (severely depressed inpatients): 375 mg/day
Usual Adult Dose for Anxiety
For generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder:
Extended release:
Initial dose: 75 mg orally once daily
Maintenance dose: May increase in daily increments of 75 mg at intervals of no less than 4 days
Maximum dose: 225 mg/day
Usual Adult Dose for Panic Disorder
Extended-release:
Initial dose: 37.5 mg once a day
Maintenance dose: May increase dose in daily increments of 75 mg at intervals of no less than 7 days
Maximum dose: 225 mg/day
Side Effects
Changes in behaviour, suicidal ideation, agitation, tremor, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, confusions, abnormal dreams, HTN, nausea, headache, asthenia, somnolence, dizziness, dry mouth, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, anorexia, sexual dysfunction, urinary frequency, visual disturbances, mydriasis, vasodilatation, paraesthesia, hypertonia, chills or fever, palpitations, wt gain or loss, arthralgia, myalgia, tinnitus, pruritus, dyspnoea, yawning, rashes, sweating, increased serum cholesterol, may impair platelet aggregation.
Contraindication
Concomitant use w/ MAOIs or w/in 14 days of discontinuing the MAOI. Use w/ linezolid or IV methylene blue.
