How it works
ARTHRATE contains Methotrexate. It is a type of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD). It is used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It is used to reduce activity of the immune system for people who have certain conditions.
Methotrexate, formerly known as amethopterin, is also a chemotherapy agent and immune-system suppressant. It is also used to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases, and ectopic pregnancy and for medical abortions.
Indications
• Severe, active Rheumatoid arthritis
• Refractory arteritis
• Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

Dosage
Initial: 7.5 mg orally as a single weekly dose, OR
2.5 mg orally every 12 hours for 3 sequential doses per week
Increase orally dose to optimum response; single dose not to exceed 20 mg/week orally (increased risk of bone marrow suppression); reduce to lowest possible effective dose
Side Effects
• fever, chills, tiredness, not feeling well;
• low blood cell counts;
• mouth sores;
• nausea, stomach pain;
• abnormal liver function tests;
• hair loss;
• burning skin lesions; or
• being more sensitive to light.
Contraindication
Relative contraindications include renal dysfunction, liver disease, active infectious disease and excessive alcohol consumption
