How it works
Losartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.
Amlodipine is in a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Amlodipine relaxes (widens) blood vessels and improves blood flow.
Indications
Hypertension
Hypertension associated with palpitation
Hypertension associated with edema
Dosage
1 tab once daily.
May increase to 2 tabs once daily 2 – 4 wk later if needed.
Max: 2 tabs/day.
Side Effects
Headache, dizziness, back pain, myalgia, resp tract disorders, asthenia/fatigue; first-dose hypotension; rash, cough, angioedema; neutropaenial GI disturbances; transient elevation of liver enzymes; taste disturbances and hyperkalaemia. Potentially Fatal: Hypotension, bradycardia, conductive system delay, CCF.
Contraindication
Losartan: Concomitant use w/ aliskiren in patients w/ diabetes and renal impairment (GFR <60 mL/min). Severe hepatic impairment. Pregnancy.
Amlodipine: Severe hypotension, shock (including cardiogenic shock), obstruction of the outflow tract of the left ventricle (e.g. aortic stenosis), haemodynamically unstable heart failure after acute MI.
