Idiopathic constipation
Constipation in diabetics
Habitual constipation
Opiod-induced constipation
Bowel preparation before colonoscopy
Pre and post operative condition
Constipation in elderly and bed-ridden patients
How it works
Sodium picosulphate:
It is hydrolysed by colonic bacteria to the active form, which then acts locally to irritate the mucosa and activate myentric neurons, thus increases the bowel movement. Along with magnesium salts, it has been used to evacuate the colon for colonoscopy or surgery.
Milk of magnesia:
It is an aqueous suspension of magnesium hydroxide (8 % w/w suspension). As a suspension in water, it is often called milk of magnesia because of its milk-like appearance. It has low water solubility. It is not absorbed in the intestine and retains water osmotically, thus increasing peristalsis and also provides laxative action.
Liquid paraffin:
It is a viscous liquid, a mixture of hydrocarbons. When taken orally, it acts as a lubricant and stool softener and eases the passage of stools.
