Hepatreat contains a stable salt of amino acids – ornithine and aspartic acid. It is used for the treatment of high ammonia levels, severe liver impairment and also in end stage liver cirrhosis. L-Ornithine is an initial substance which starts the detoxification cycle or urea cycle, by activating the urea cycle enzymes, carbamyl tranferase and synthetase- which converts toxic ammonia into urea and helps the diseased liver to perform normal functions smoothly. It promotes detoxification by lowering the elevated levels of ammonia in blood (hyperammonemia) and improved the subjective symptoms of nausea and vomiting. L-Aspartate is an essential component of citric acid cycle, which liberates energy (ATP) and helps in the regeneration of damaged cells. Thus restores normal metabolic functions of liver and improves the general symptoms of weakness. In addition, aspartate is itself an excitatory neurotransmitter and helps in maintaining the glutamate concentration in the brain. In combination L-Ornithine L-Aspartate improves hepatic encephalopathy by: (1) Stimulating hepatic synthesis of urea. (2) Increasing glutamine production in the muscle. (3) Regulating the relationship between branched and aromatic amino acids.
