(Febuxostat 40/80mg Tablet)
(Febuxostat 40/80mg Tablet)
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor indicated for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout. Febuxostat is not recommended for the treatment of asymptomatic hyperuricemia.
How it works
Febuxostat is a Xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Febuxostat is a non-purine, selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase. It achieves its therapeutic effect by decreasing serum uric acid. Uric acid, the end-product of purine metabolism in humans, is generated secondary to xanthine oxidase-mediated biotransformation of each of the following steps:
hypoxanthine ——— xanthine ———– uric acid.
Febuxostat inhibits the oxidized and reduced forms of xanthine oxidase but it has no significant effect on enzymes involved in purine or pyrimidine metabolism.
Indications
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor indicated for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout. Febuxostat is not recommended for the treatment of asymptomatic hyperuricemia.
Dosage
The recommended starting dose of febuxostat is 40mg daily; however, a dose of 80mg daily is recommended for patients who do not achieve a serum urate < 6mg/dl after 2 weeks of treatment at the lower dose.
Side Effects
Liver function abnormalities, arthralgias (joint pain), rashes, diarrhoea, nausea & headache.
Contraindication
It is not indicated in malignancy induced hyperuriceamia.
